Appalachian State University is proud to offer the ONLY Bachelor of Science Career and Technical Education Program in the state of North Carolina. The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program at Appalachian State University is comprised of 75 plus majors and three full time faculty. Students can choose from five areas of concentration:

Each concentration provides students with the opportunity to focus on middle and high school teaching while developing a greater depth of knowledge in a specific area of Career and Technical Education (CTE).  Through experiential learning and relevant projects, students are challenged to develop a comprehensive knowledge base. Partnerships with programs across campus give CTE students the opportunity to work with discipline specific experts while still learning the art of teaching.  


Business, Finance and Information Technology Education  (BFIT)

The Business, Finance and Information Technology Education (BFIT) concentration focuses on the preparation of business education teachers in grades 6-12. BFIT instructors teach a variety of courses in these grades from business law and computer applications to personal finance and computer networking. Students in the BFIT concentration will learn how to teach young people about business skills and techniques, an understanding of basic economics, and business attitudes essential to participate in the multinational marketplace as productive workers and consumers. Students in the BFIT concentration will also develop the skills necessary to teach students about financial management and make intelligent consumer and business-related choices.

Because of the extensive training in business subjects, individuals that choose not to teach after graduation have found lucrative and successful careers in all types of business fields.


Business and Marketing Entrepreneurship Education (BMEE)

The Business and Marketing Entrepreneurship Education (BMEE) concentration focuses on the preparation of business and marketing teachers in grades 6-12. BMEE instructors teach a variety of courses in these grades from marketing and project management to personal finance and hospitality and tourism. Students in the BMEE concentration will learn how to teach young people about marketing communications, marketing management, marketing research, merchandising, and professional sales. Students in the BMEE concentration will also develop the skills necessary to teach students about selling, promotion, pricing, marketing-information management, market planning, product/service management, and channel management.
Because of the extensive training in business subjects, individuals that choose not to teach after graduation have found lucrative and successful careers in all types of business and marketing fields.

 

Family and Consumer Sciences

The Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FACS) concentration focuses on the preparation of family and consumer sciences teachers in grades 6-12. FACS instructors teach a variety of courses in these grades from foods and apparel to early childhood development and interior design. Students in the FACS concentration will learn how to teach young people about family life, work life, and careers. Students in the FACS concentration will also develop the skills necessary to teach students about Consumer Education and Resource Management, Early Childhood Education and Services, Family and Interpersonal Relationships, Food Production and Services, Foods, Nutrition and Wellness, Housing, Interiors and Design,Parenting Education and Human Development, and Textiles, Apparel and Fashion.
Because of the extensive training in these areas, individuals that choose not to teach after graduation have found lucrative and successful careers in all types of family and consumer sciences fields.

 

Technology, Engineering and Design Education

The Technology, Engineering and Design Education (TED) concentration focuses on the preparation of technology, engineering and design education in grades 6-12. TED instructors teach a variety of courses in these grades from technological design and game art and design to technological systems and robotics. Students in the TED concentration will learn how to teach young people about technology and its importance and its effects upon society, the economy and the environment. Students in the TED concentration will also develop the skills necessary to teach students about design and engineering, biotechnology, communications, energy, power and transportation, construction and manufacturing technologies.
Because of the extensive training in these areas, individuals that choose not to teach after graduation have found lucrative and successful careers in all types of engineering and technical fields.


Trade and Industrial Education

The Trade and Industrial  Education (T&I) concentration focuses on the preparation of technology, engineering and design education in grades 9-12. T&I instructors teach specific set of courses related to their area of expertise in these grades.  These courses range from Carpentry and Welding and Drafting to Automotive. Students in the T&I concentration will learn how to teach young people about concepts, layout, design, materials, production, assembly, quality control, maintenance, troubleshooting, construction, repair and service of industrial, commercial and residential goods and products. Students in the T&I concentration will also develop the skills necessary to teach students about a specific area of industry, as well as the credentials and certifications needed to be successful in their chosen pathway.

 

Because of the extensive training in these areas, individuals that choose not to teach after graduation have found lucrative and successful careers in all types of industrial and  technical fields.
